6 SENSES – 9 KRAKOW FESTIVALS
"6 senses" is a new initiative of Krakow City Hall which includes 9 festivals.
Some of them have already rooted themselves into the cultural landscape
of the city, namely Misteria Paschalia, Sacrum-Profanum, Międzynarodowy
Festiwal Teatralny – Dedykacje (the International Theatre Festival –
Dedications), Festiwal Muzyki Polskiej (Polish Music Festival) and
Krakowskie Noce (Krakow Nights) while the remaining 4 events are
entirely new projects: Cracow Screen Festival, Off Camera, Art Boom,
Boska Komedia (Divine Comedy).
During the Misteria Paschalia Festival organisers present the music connected with the Holy Week and Easter. Starting from the first edition in 2004, the most outstanding world artists enchant listeners with their performances of ancient music within the period of the Holy Wednesday to Easter Monday. The Festival is organised by the Krakow Festival Office.
The Sacrum Profanum Festival is a presentation of instrumental and vocal-instrumental musical masterpieces in the geographic arrangement. Its first edition was held in 2003. Concerts show a review of the 19th and 20th-century artists output by their nationality.
A lot of famous musicians and groups perform in each edition for example: Tomasz Stańko, Leszek Możdżer, London Sinfonietta, Theatre of Voices. The Festival is organised by the Krakow Festival Office.
The legendary Ensemble Modern from Frankfurt will visit Krakow in September 2008 to open the series of four festival concerts dedicated to Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Each edition of the International Theatre Festival – Dedications is either a tribute to a great artist or an important trend in theatre history. This year the work of Bertold Brecht, one of the most important playwrights and reformers of the theatre in the 20th century, will be presented.
In November, it will be able to watch Piccolo Teatro di Milano presenting their outstanding recital of Milva, Milva sings Brecht (“Milva canta Brecht”) directed by Cristina Pezzoli.
The Polish Music Festival will take place between November 11th and November 16th, 2008. The idea of the festival is to promote Polish music performed by recognized artists, foreign ones in particular. Each edition of the festival is a presentation of the work of several dozen of composers and this year, the sensational The Szymanowski Quarter will pay their visit to Krakow accompanied by a remarkable pianist Jonathan Plowright. The compositions of Szymon Laks, Grazyna Bacewicz, Pawel Szmanski and Juliusz Zarebski will be performed.
Krakow Nights (Krakowskie Noce) is a popular project which incorporates the following events: Night of Museums (16/17 May 2008), Night of Theaters (13/14 June 2008), Night of Jazz (19/20 July 2008), Night of Cracovia Sacra (15/16 August 2008).
The International Independent Film Festival ‘Off Camera’ is an event devoted to Polish and foreign cinematography. For 4 days (2-5 October 2008) nearly 150 movies will be presented during almost over 400 shows. The program offers movies from different corners of the world as well as the retrospectives of the distinguished creators of the international independent films.
Art Boom is a festival of visual arts entirely devoted to modern art. From June 2009, the city’s public spaces (market squares, Planty, Blonia) will serve as a big manifestation of art (installations, new media, murals, painting, sculpture).
The theatre festival Boska Komedia (Divine Comedy) will be held in December 2008. During 10 festival days 7 spectacles from different parts of the world (Africa, Asia, both Americas and Europe) will be presented.
